A Reader Shares What Makes Her Happy at Christmas
I fail to see how the
general movie-loving populace finds "It's a Wonderful
Life" enjoyable, Christmasy, soothing, or anything
else positive except possibly "dramatic." It is a
movie filled with all my worst nightmares. Too many
children, no money, a bankrupt business, a
partner/husband/father who decides to take matters in
his own hands and fucking kill himself ( almost,
granted, but the movie TAKES YOU THERE ) not to
mention an entire community hanging on the thread of
human decency. It is too much for a cynic/romantic to
bear.
For my money, a schmaltzy drawing of a big golden flame in a fireplace always does it for me, and the sound of the crackling, though that has to be real. Cookies and milk, or roast beef and yorkshire pudding, take your pick. Trees, gorgeous trees ( with snow on them for the season!) A guy with a guitar and hair that is not too long and is shiningly clean. Sleeping... dog, child, anything small, with the exception of ants.
Thanks for reminding me of the advent calendar;
